Little black crow

Little Black Crow is a quiet, meditative book. The text moves like a gentle chant, full of simple questions addressed to the crow: Where do you go? What do you see? Do you feel lonely? The language is pared down, but the repetition and rhythm create a sense of intimacy, almost like a lullaby.

Raschka’s watercolor illustrations carry the same mood — soft washes of gray, blue, and black that leave space around the bird. The crow often appears small against the wide sky or distant fields, giving the pages an openness that mirrors the wondering tone of the words.

The effect is tender rather than heavy. Instead of answering the questions, Raschka leaves them open, inviting the reader to linger with them. The crow becomes a mirror for the child’s own thoughts about solitude, belonging, and the mystery of the world.
