Maurice (Mooris) Polydore Marie Bernard Maeterlinck (1862-1949) was a Belgian writer, playwright and philosopher; winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1911.
He was born in Ghent, into a notary’s family; he graduated from the Faculty of Law at the University of Ghent. Maeterlinck’s first poem was published in 1883 in the magazine “Jeune Belgique”, and five years later the poetry collection “Orangeries” was published. In 1889, Maeterlinck wrote his first play “Princess Malene”, which made him famous as a playwright.
At the end of the century, he moved to Paris; there, in 1909, Maeterlinck’s play “The Blue Bird” was first staged, which later brought him worldwide fame.
In 1940, Maeterlinck left France for the United States, but in 1947, due to health problems, he returned to Europe. He spent the last years of his life in seclusion and wrote almost nothing.
