A hundred years ago, in 1920, Hugh Lofting’s The Story of Doctor Dolittle was published. Just a few years later, in 1923–1924, Korney Chukovsky adapted it into Russian and soon created his own verse tales about Doctor Aybolit. In 1936, the fairy tale Doctor Aybolit was published, and since then the kind doctor has remained one of the most beloved characters in children’s literature.
This edition features illustrations by Viktor Chizhikov, a master known for his lively, witty, and warm drawings. His illustrations bring the story to life, giving the characters personality and including small humorous touches that make Doctor Aybolit’s world feel especially vivid. The illustrations were awarded a diploma from the prestigious Hans Christian Andersen Prize.
