Listen, Elephant

Author: Ludwik Jerzy Kern
Illustrator: Gennady Kalinovsky
Year: 1969
Publisher: Detskaya literatura

Original title: Послушай-ка, слон

One day, instead of taking the vitamins his mother so thoughtfully gave him, Pinya secretly feeds them to Dominic, a white porcelain elephant he found in the attic. After a while, Dominic suddenly discovers that his bookshelf has become a bit cramped. Thus, Pinya gains a good-natured, inquisitive, and slightly grumpy friend.

The clumsy but fragile elephant argues with books, takes onomatopoeia lessons from a teapot, exercises with an ant, and becomes Pinya’s faithful companion.

Kern’s story is a funny, unusual tale of friendship and imagination. Kalinovsky’s graphics are precise and clear. His black-and-white drawings use strong lines and contrasts, showing scale and movement. Color inserts appear at key points, adding focus without overwhelming the page.
