Leo Lionni

Leo Lionni (1910–1999) was a pioneering author and illustrator of children’s books. Born in the Netherlands, he grew up partly in Italy and later moved to the United States in 1939, where he worked as an art director in advertising and for Fortune magazine.

In 1962, Lionni began creating children’s books, bringing his background in visual arts and avant-garde design into storytelling. He often used collage, color, and simple shapes to make his illustrations feel alive and dynamic, turning even small details into part of the narrative.

Over his career, he produced more than forty books, many of which became classics. He received four Caldecott Honors—for Inch by Inch, Swimmy, Frederick, and Alexander and the Wind-Up Mouse—recognizing both the clarity of his storytelling and the originality of his visual style.
