Alenka Sottler (born 1958) is a Slovenian artist and illustrator. She was born in Ljubljana into the family of sculptor Gorazd Sottler and received her first informal training in drawing and sculpture in her father’s studio. She later graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Ljubljana, completing postgraduate studies in painting.
Since 1988, Sottler has worked as a freelance illustrator for many Slovenian and international publishers, including Mladinska knjiga, Slovenia’s largest publishing house. She has illustrated over fifty books for children and adults, creating both black-and-white and color illustrations, and her work ranges from contemporary stories to international folk tales.
Sottler’s illustrations are recognized for their clarity, elegance, and expressive style, combining traditional motifs with modern artistic sensibilities. She has received international recognition, including a nomination for the Hans Christian Andersen Award in 2014. She continues to live and work in Ljubljana, Slovenia, and remains one of the leading figures in contemporary children’s book illustration.
