Jeannie Baker (born November 2, 1950) is a British-born Australian author, illustrator and visual artist of children’s picture books. She was born in Croydon, London, and studied graphic design at the Croydon School of Art and Brighton Polytechnic in England. After receiving her honours degree in Art and Design, she moved to Australia in 1975, where she established her career working in collage, illustration and children’s book design.
Baker uses relief-collage techniques and incorporates natural textures such as bark, feathers, cracked paint, earth, knitted wool and rusty tin in her images, stating:
“When I can, I like to use textures from the actual materials portrayed, such as bark, feathers, cracked paint, earth, knitted wool, and rusty tin… so that their natural textures become an integral part of the work.”
Her work is held in gallery collections in London, New York and across Australia, and her picture books have won numerous awards. She was Australia’s nominee for the 2018 Hans Christian Andersen Award for illustration.
