Neighbors is a quiet, introspective picture book about a girl who has just moved into a new apartment and begins to think about the people living around her. The neighbors are close in space yet unknown, present only through sounds and small clues behind the walls, ceiling, and floor. Through her thoughts and observations, the story reflects on how we imagine the lives of others and how easily distance forms between people who share the same building.
Denisevich works in expressive black-and-white ink, using small touches of red to mark the girl’s presence. As the heroine steps outside and her world gradually expands, subtle color appears, signaling a shift from imagination and solitude toward connection. The book moves between whimsical speculation and moments of existential wondering, capturing the mix of curiosity, loneliness, and anticipation that accompanies moving to a new place.
Neighbors is contemplative and visually meticulous, full of small architectural details and thoughtful cross-sections of the apartment building. It explores the idea of living among strangers, how we picture them, how we differ from them, and how meeting even one person can open the world beyond the walls we know.
