Ron Brooks (born 1948) is an Australian illustrator whose work has become foundational in the country’s picture-book tradition.
He studied art in Melbourne, later continuing at Swinburne University and the Melbourne University of Technology and Design. Over several decades, Brooks created some of Australia’s most beloved picture books and is considered one of the nation’s most recognizable illustrators.
His long collaboration with authors such as Jenny Wagner and Margaret Wild resulted in many classics, including John Brown, Rose and the Midnight Cat, The Bunyip of Berkeley’s Creek, Motor Bill and the Lovely Caroline, Henry’s Bed and Henry’s Bath, Old Pig, and Rosie and Tortoise.
In 2001, the Brooks-illustrated Fox by Margaret Wild received the CBCA Picture Book of the Year award, along with several other national honors.
Ron Brooks currently lives in Tanzania, where he continues to illustrate, write, and work in design.
