Annegert Fuchshuber

Annegert Fuchshuber (1940–1998) was a German author and illustrator of children’s books, known for her expressive visual style and thoughtful, often emotionally rich storytelling. She was born in Magdeburg and later moved with her family to Bavaria, where she spent most of her life. After finishing school in 1960, she studied at the Werkkunstschule in Augsburg, completed an apprenticeship as a typesetter and worked for a period in advertising in Munich. These early experiences shaped her strong sense of design and her professional approach to illustration.

Fuchshuber began working as a freelance illustrator in 1964, and her first illustrated book was published in 1968. Only a year later, in 1969, she created her first book as both author and illustrator, Der allerschönste Stern der Welt. Over the following decades she built an impressive body of work, writing and illustrating numerous books that were translated into many languages and reached large international audiences. Her stories ranged from gentle fairy-tale narratives to books exploring more complex social themes, such as displacement and belonging, as seen in her well-known work Karlinchen.

Throughout her career, Fuchshuber was recognized for her distinctive artistic voice, characterized by warm colors, clear compositions and a deep sensitivity to the emotional world of children. Her books combined visual beauty with meaningful messages, making them valuable not only as picture books but also as tools for reflection and empathy. Annegert Fuchshuber continued to work until her death in 1998 in Augsburg, leaving behind a lasting contribution to European children’s literature.
