Cossack Holota belongs to the golden treasury of the Vesyolka publishing house. It was created by the Ukrainian writer Maria Prygara and the artist Heorhiy Yakutovich, and first appeared in print in 1966, becoming beloved by many generations of young readers.
The story is set in the 17th–18th centuries, at a time when Ukrainian Cossacks fought fiercely to defend their homeland from conquerors. Through vivid episodes and dramatic encounters, the book introduces readers to the daring and brave Cossack warriors whose heroic deeds are sung in old folk dumas (ballads).
The historical theme is central not only to Prygara’s storytelling but also to the artistic legacy of the outstanding Ukrainian graphic artist Heorhiy Yakutovich, who illustrated Cossack Holota with strength and sensitivity.
This edition was reissued in 2010 in collaboration with Navchalna Knyha – Bohdan, bringing this treasured tale to new generations.
