Angela Barrett (born 1955) is an English illustrator who lives and works in London. After studying at Maidstone School of Art and then at the Royal College of Art, she went on to teach at the Cambridge College of Technology and Drawing and at the Chelsea College of Art.
Barrett created her first illustrations for the fairy tale The King, the Cat and the Fiddle in 1983, and the following year they won an award, marking the beginning of her successful career.
She has collaborated with well-known writers such as Martin Waddell, Susan Hill, Josephine Poole, and Naomi Lewis, and has also illustrated retellings of ballets and some of Shakespeare’s plays. Among her most celebrated books are Beauty and the Beast, Snow-White, Joan of Arc, and Through the Tempests Dark and Wild.
Barrett primarily paints with watercolor, gouache, colored pencil and ink. Her art is atmospheric, detailed, and delicate. Her illustrations often convey a dreamlike, almost cinematic quality, with a subtle use of light and shadow that creates both enchantment and mystery.
