1911: The Triangle Waist Company occupies the top three floors of the Asch Building in New York City. The company makes blouses and employs about 500 workers, mostly young immigrant women.
On March 25, a fire breaks out. The factory owners flee, leaving the trapped men and women to die. The fire kills 146 people, including 129 young Italian and Jewish women from Eastern Europe. Sixty-two of them jump out of the windows.
The story of the worst industrial accident in New York City history is told in one of these blouses. Her words shed light on the exploitation of female workers, as well as the fight for women’s emancipation.
