Ilya Iosifovich Kabakov, a famous conceptual artist, was born in Dnepropetrovsk in 1933. During the war, he was evacuated to Samarkand, where he entered the school at the Leningrad Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. After the war, he moved to Moscow, studied at the Moscow Printing Institute. He worked as an illustrator of children’s books and magazines.
Since 1988, he lived and worked in New York. In 2008, together with his wife Emilia, he was awarded the art prize of the Emperor of Japan, and was awarded the Order of Friendship for his great contribution to the preservation, development and popularization of Russian culture abroad.
Kabakov’s works are in the collections of many museums and galleries – the Tretyakov Gallery, the Hermitage, the Russian Museum, the Museum of Modern Art in New York and others.
