Very Far Away is Maurice Sendak’s second picture book as both author and illustrator, following Kenny’s Window. The story is about a little boy who, after getting in trouble at home, decides to run away in search of “very far away.” Along the way, he meets talking animals and a curious old man, each giving him advice that doesn’t quite help. In the end, he realizes that home is still the best place to be.
It’s a gentle, whimsical story that already shows Sendak’s unique way of mixing everyday childhood feelings with dreamlike adventures.
