Gail E. Haley is an American author and illustrator of children’s books, born in Charlotte, North Carolina. She grew up immersed in art – her father was an art-director – and later studied commercial art and fine art at the Richmond Professional Institute and the University of Virginia. 
Her debut book as both writer and illustrator, My Kingdom for a Dragon (1962), was self-published. She went on to illustrate and author numerous acclaimed works, and holds the unique distinction of winning both the American Caldecott Medal (for A Story, a Story, 1970) and the British Kate Greenaway Medal (for The Post Office Cat, 1976). 
Her books often explore folklore, myth, and the natural world, rendered through woodcuts, linocuts and richly textured images. She continues to work as an educator and advocate for children’s literature and illustration.
