Heorhiy Yakutovich

Heorhiy Vyacheslavovych Yakutovich (1930–2000) was a Ukrainian artist, graphic artist, and book illustrator. He was born on 14 February 1930 in Kyiv, where he lived and worked until his death on 5 September 2000.

Yakutovich studied at the Kyiv State Art Institute (now the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture), graduating in 1954, where he trained under noted teachers including Illarion Pleshchynskyi and Vasyl Kasian.

He was the author of numerous book illustrations known for their expressive interpretation of literary works, and he worked in a variety of graphic techniques, most notably linocut, woodcut, and etching. He also created poster art and contributed decorative design elements for film productions.

Yakutovich held prestigious titles during his career, including Honored Artist of the Ukrainian SSR (1968) and People’s Artist of the Ukrainian SSR (1990). He was a Corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Arts (from 1988) and later became Professor and Academician of the Academy of Arts of Ukraine. He was also a member of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine and a laureate of the Taras Shevchenko State Prize of Ukraine.

His work played a significant role in shaping Ukrainian graphic art in the 20th century, and his illustrations remain important in the nation’s cultural and artistic heritage
