Patrick McDonnell

Patrick McDonnell (born 1956) is an American cartoonist, author, and playwright.

He is best known as the creator of the long-running comic strip Mutts, launched in 1994 and widely syndicated in newspapers. Before that, he created the comic Bad Baby, which ran for about a decade in Parents magazine.

McDonnell has also worked as an illustrator for major publications, including The New York Times (notably its Sunday magazine) and The Observer.

His picture book The Gift of Nothing was adapted into a stage musical at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Another book, Me… Jane — about the childhood of Jane Goodall — received the Caldecott Honor in 2012.

Many of McDonnell’s works have been adapted into animation, including the Mutts television specials and short features.
