Anton Pieck

Anton Franciscus Pieck (1895–1987) was a Dutch painter, graphic artist, and illustrator, best known for his nostalgic, highly detailed depictions of old-world life.

He was born in Den Helder, the Netherlands, and showed artistic talent from an early age; at 11 years old, he won his first prize for a still life. Pieck studied at the State School for Applied Arts (Rijksnormaalschool voor Teekenonderwijzers) in Amsterdam and later worked for many years as an art teacher.

His work spans a wide range of techniques, including oil painting, watercolor, etching, engraving, and lithography. Alongside his easel paintings, he became widely known for his illustrations, especially for fairy tales and classic literature, often characterized by meticulous line work and a warm, atmospheric style.

Pieck also gained international recognition for his involvement in the design of the Dutch theme park Efteling, where his visual style helped shape the park’s fairy-tale aesthetic. His imagery is typically associated with romanticized scenes of 18th- and 19th-century Europe, filled with intricate architectural details and everyday life.
