Antoni Boratyński

Antoni Boratyński (1930–2015) was a Polish graphic artist and book illustrator, known for his expressive, often dramatic style in children’s and young adult literature.

He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw and later continued his education in Budapest. Over the course of his career, Boratyński collaborated with many major Polish publishing houses, including Nasza Księgarnia, Iskry, Ludowa Spółdzielnia Wydawnicza, and Glob. Books featuring his illustrations were published internationally in numerous countries.

He illustrated a wide range of literary works, including Krabat by Otfried Preußler and The Neverending Story by Michael Ende. His work was recognized with multiple awards; notably, books illustrated by him twice received prizes from the Polish Book Publishers Association (PTWK) for the most beautiful book of the year — Krabat in 1977 and The Neverending Story in 1987.

Boratyński’s illustrations are distinguished by their strong graphic line, dynamic compositions, and a sense of tension that often enhances the darker or more complex aspects of the texts he worked with.
