Kevin Henkes

Kevin Henkes (1960) is an American author and illustrator of children’s picture books. He wrote his first book in 1981 while still in college. Since then, he has created around fifty picture books.

His work has been widely praised. In 2005 he received the Caldecott Medal for Kitten’s First Full Moon. Two other books he both wrote and illustrated — Owen and Waiting — earned Caldecott Honors.

Henkes combines a keen sense of storytelling with expressive, sensitive illustrations. His books often deal with everyday childhood experiences — growth, family, change, kindness — and manage to speak simply and honestly, without sentimentality.

Over the decades, Kevin Henkes has become one of the most respected names in children’s literature. His picture books remain beloved by young readers and critics alike, thanks to their warmth, insight, and artistic integrity.
